Marriage Meetings for Lasting Love: 30 Minutes a Week to the Relationship You've Always Wanted Reviews
I thought I knew everything about marriage and communication. We've done counseling a few times. I've read a bazillion books. What this book did for our marriage is similar to what How to Talk So Your Kids Will Listen did for our parenting. Yes, it's nice to know what you're supposed to do but most books leave it there. You have to figure it out on your own. This book walks you through step by step HOW to do it.
Really felt like I wasted my time reading this book. There is an appendix in the back with everything you need to know. I love the concept - meet with your spouse once per week. But that’s basically all you need to know. Hopefully I just saved you $10 and a few hours.
Once I got over myself, this book was very helpful in showing me how to handle conflicts better and be accepting of things that are not able to be changed.
Although this process is awkward in the beginning it has huge benefits in the end. It has certainly helped my husband and I with through issues but also just get a grip on the daily needs of our family and ourselves. So simple but so powerful.
I think this helps set the stage for productive meetings however both parties have to want to make the meetings work and have read the book.
I love having this book come out now. So many people no longer know what it takes to make marriages work happily. I haven't finished the book, but it just gets better. It starts out with a stept-by-step process, valuable to refer back to when you hit a glitch. Once I began reading the section entitled, "When I-Statements Backfire", I began understanding myself and husband better and will be careful not to bruise a tender spot--now that I might understand how behavior neither of us likes happens. I'm eager to read more. This is a gift.
It took a few meetings before we got in the groove but it is working great. It provides a space and framework each week to talk about things which is just what we needed. Highly recommended.
I really love the ideas in this book. And in spite of not yet having the meetings with my traveling over-busy spouse, some of the concepts and conversation techniques have been extremely useful.
